Frequently Asked Questions

When can I stock fish in my pond

If we are open, it is a good time to stock your pond. Cooler days cause less stress on the fish. We do temporarily close for a few weeks in the dead of summer during July and August due to heat.  We open back up for fall and close for the season after Thanksgiving. Our opening and closing are weather dependent but otherwise we are open rain or shine through the season.

What can i do to get rid of moss and other aquatic plants

We recommend 10 grass carp per surface acre and they will take care of everything but cattails and lily pads. In addition to grass carp you can add pond dye, this helps cut the sunlight to the plants and slows down photosynthesis to slow the growth even more so the grass carp can help get it under control. We have both Diploid and Triploid Grass Carp.

What do I need to do after stocking my pond

We recommend adding fathead minnows in the spring and fall, 10 lbs per surface acre to help feed your fish. The better fed they are the faster they get big. If you are feeding your fish on a regular basis you do not need to worry about this as much but again, the more they eat the bigger they get. Our rule of thumb when using fish chow is to start feeding your fish when you start cutting your grass, then in the fall you quit feeding them when you stop cutting your grass. Even though a fishes metabolism slows down in winter they do still feed and this is where fathead minnows come into play.

What is the difference between Diploid and Triploid Grass Carp

While diploid grass carp don't readily reproduce in a pond or lake some states require that only Triploid grass carp be used. Triploid grass carp are certified sterile and definitely will not reproduce.

Kansas and Arkansas now require Triploid grass carp only

Can I add Koi to my pond

Yes, you can, we have many customers that have added koi to the ponds that they have, they like the flash of colors when they feed the other fish. If the pond is existing, you need to make sure the koi that you introduce are the same size or larger than any bass that you have.
